The University of Foggia has always been committed to promoting a culture of energy saving and environmental protection. It has established a specific delegation for Socio-Environmental Performance and Sustainability, and the Rector's Delegate is Prof. Giulio Mario Cappelletti, a professor in Commodity Science who has focused on environmental research topics for years.
The University has always participated in highly popular initiatives for the diffusion of environmental awareness, such as the Radio Due program Caterpillar. The host, Massimo Cirri, was also a guest with the show "Spr+Eco, formulas for not feeding waste."

To this end, the University of Foggia has also adopted a decalogue dedicated to students, teaching staff, and technical-administrative personnel, which suggests behaviors to be implemented in university environments and in private life:

  • Turn off the lights when they are not needed;
  • Turn off electronic devices and do not leave them in stand-by mode;
  • Defrost the refrigerator frequently and keep the coil clean and distanced from the wall so that air can circulate;
  • Purchase electrical and electronic devices with energy class A;
  • Put a lid on pots when boiling water and always ensure that the flame is not wider than the bottom of the pot;
  • If it is too hot, turn down the radiators instead of opening the windows, and reduce drafts from window frames with suitable seals;
  • Use curtains to create air gaps in front of glass, fixtures, and external doors;
  • Do not leave curtains closed in front of radiators;
  • Insert special insulating and reflective films between the external walls and the radiators;
  • Adopt behaviors aimed at reducing water consumption;
  • Correctly sort and separate waste;
  • Limit the use of paper;
  • Avoid, or at least reduce, food waste;
  • Use public transport or a bicycle;
  • Use the car as little as possible and, if necessary, share it with others travelling the same route.

Furthermore, a specific environmental report, drafted by Prof. Giulio Mario Cappelletti, was elaborated, along with a vademecum on the reduction of environmental impact and the energy plan.

The University of Foggia’s Commitment to Sustainability

Energy

  • The University uses 100% electricity from renewable sources only.
  • Energy is supplied by a provider that generates power from photovoltaic plants, including those installed directly on University of Foggia buildings.
  • Water-saving devices and rainwater recovery systems have been installed.
  • An energy-efficiency programme has been launched: old systems have been replaced with high-efficiency solutions and LED lighting has been installed in all university buildings, significantly reducing consumption and ensuring longer lifespan.
  • Electricity and water consumption are constantly monitored to further improve efficiency.
  • The University Energy Plan has been drawn up as a strategic tool for the planning and sustainable management of energy resources.

Waste and Resources

  • The University carries out separate waste collection in collaboration with AMIU Foggia, with dedicated bins placed throughout all buildings.
  • Eco-friendly water fountains dispensing filtered water have been installed, helping to drastically reduce the use of plastic bottles.
  • Paper consumption has been reduced through the digitisation of administrative processes and the elimination of the obligation to submit printed copies of degree theses.

Mobility

  • The University promotes sustainable mobility through an electric bicycle rental service available at several campuses at discounted rates, also thanks to the collaboration with the university spin-off “Io Faccio Futuro”.
  • Secure bicycle racks have been installed.
  • Several hybrid-engine service vehicles have been purchased to reduce emissions from the university fleet.

Teaching & Training

  • An interdepartmental 32-hour Course on Environmental Sustainability has been established and is open to all University of Foggia students.
  • A basic training course on environmental sustainability for technical-administrative and library staff is active and has now reached its fourth edition.

Third Mission & Outreach

  • Numerous events and seminars on the 2030 Agenda topics have been organised, involving students and the wider community.
  • The Academic Senate has approved the Sustainability Handbook (Vademecum per la Sostenibilità), a guiding document for the University’s sustainable policies and actions.
  • The University of Foggia is a member of RUS Puglia, the regional network created together with the other five Apulian universities to promote and share sustainability best practices.
  • The University actively participates in international sustainability rankings, including the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking and the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking.
