Sleep Medicine

The Level II Master’s Program in “Sleep Medicine” is divided into 6 modules that will cover the following topics:

• Module 1 – Anatomy and Physiology of Sleep
• Module 2 – Clinical and Instrumental Assessment
• Module 3 – Management of OSAS with Surgical and Pharmacological Therapy
• Module 4 – Treatment of OSAS with Oral Devices (Oral Device Therapy)
• Module 5 – Nighttime Ventilation Therapy and Treatment Strategies for OSAS
• Module 6 – OSAS: Complications and Multidisciplinary Management

The Master’s program aims to train medical doctors and dentists with specific and specialized expertise in the field of obstructive sleep disorders. Graduates will possess a high level of professional qualification, enabling them to competently address a variety of clinical situations. Graduates of the program will be able to range from simply diagnosing the presence and severity of disorders in adult patients and identifying their causes and predisposing factors, to planning and performing medical and surgical interventions. The program will address the specific diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for pediatric patients, a population that requires clinical and decision-making protocols distinct from those for adults. The Master’s program includes an in-depth focus on anesthesiology. This training module aims to equip dentists with the critical skills needed to assess and manage perioperative risk before referring patients for complex diagnostic procedures (such as sleep endoscopy) or potential surgical interventions. Furthermore, graduates will also be able to prescribe orthodontic devices that can resolve the condition and prevent related complications, such as hypertension, accidental morbidity linked to daytime sleepiness, and cerebrovascular consequences. These services may be provided for and on behalf of private citizens, professionals, social security agencies, and/or healthcare organizations.

The master’s program lasts one year, for a total of 1,500 hours, corresponding to 60 academic credits (CFU), and will be structured as follows:

• In-person lectures: 138 hours (23 CFU);
• Lectures in distance learning: 60 hours (10 CFU);
• Laboratories: 24 hours (4 CFU);
• Practical exercises: 48 hours (8 CFU);
• Internship: 250 hours (10 CFU);
• Final Exam (written paper/thesis): 125 hours (5 CFU).

Attendance at the master’s program is mandatory. To earn the degree, each participant must attend at least 70% of the class hours and 80% of the internship hours.

Participants will take midterm exams at the end of each module.

At the end of the training program, there will be a final exam consisting of
defense of a thesis on one of the topics covered in the course and on the internship completed.

The master's program is open to anyone who holds a master's degree or
a degree obtained under the regulations in effect prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99 in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics (LM-46), in Medicine and Surgery (LA-41), with a specialization in Odontostomatology, or equivalent qualifications.
