Learning objectives

The course aims to provide a training program designed to deepen participants’ theoretical and practical knowledge, enabling them to make appropriate treatment decisions when caring for patients with special needs, while equipping professionals and recent graduates with the skills and latest information on clinical protocols and procedures in the field of special dentistry.
Special Care Dentistry is the branch of dentistry that treats patients with special needs: patients with mental and/or physical disabilities, chronic debilitating conditions, or poor compliance, which make any dental procedure particularly challenging.
The WHO defines disability (physical and mental) as “any limitation or loss of the ability to perform an activity in the manner or to the extent considered normal for a human being.”
Oral health is of the utmost importance for these patients, and the purpose of the course is to provide simple, reproducible guidelines for better approaching and managing these types of patients.
Building on an understanding of the basic concepts of specialized dentistry, the course will address topics related to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, with the goal of developing an individualized treatment plan for each patient that takes their specific needs into account.
The focus on major systemic diseases with oral manifestations will ensure that clinicians can make appropriate use of the latest technologies and develop the expertise needed to formulate an effective treatment plan (both in-office and at-home) for these patient groups.
